When I first heard about the project, i was very skeptical. I keep on thinking that it would not be much fun and boring. This kind of activity may excite me, but it rarely does. I always had this thought in my mind that even as social beings, we have to put ourself first. I don't think it's necessary for us to do community service, as there might be a lot of people doing the same thing. There might be a lot of people that is certainly found happiness in this kind of activities. I also thought, why don't the riches do this? They have a lot of things they have in their possession, and they should definitely share it with others. But nevertheless, I along with other members, keep on preparing and brainstorming regarding the trip to Rumah Charis. As the days go on, it is finally the day I came to Rumah Charis.
My team was given to work on a project, we chose the
Rumah Charis as our project location. The Rumah Charis is located in the
old klang area on a awan pintal road. I am in the blogger or
publication division with Kanken, Janet and Jun Wen. At first I didn't
really understand the assignments of bloggers and publications, I also
asked Ken Janet and Junwen what I should do. And in the end I created
blogger and updated some activities. I am very happy in my division
because Kanken, Janet and Jun Wen really helped me in this division.

Our group members are distributed into few groups including programmes, multimedia, publicity and logistics. As a member of programme bureau, I was given task to design activities and events for the project. Through this, I obtained experience in planning suitable activities, games and learning sessions for children so that they can learn something new and useful for them in life while having fun and enjoying themselves.

I was nominated to become the leader of publicity bureau. This was a great chance for me to learn how to manage a blog properly, enhance my leadership skills and so on. During the meeting of the project, I learnt to be brave to voice out my opinion and tolerate with other members. Although we came out with different opinion and sometimes might quarrel with each others, we still can make a final decision peacefully. Luck was on our side as we were managed to find a strategic venue to conduct our project (Rumah Charis).

We brainstormed our ideas to plan out the best activities that we could do at Rumah Charis and at the same time making sure that the children would learn good things from us and that we would help the manager of the Rumah Charis as well as lighten their heavy loads. From this, I learned that working in a team is important for any task to work out smoothly. With the help of every committee member in the group, everything can be carried out easily and less time spend on the work.

Before going to the children's home, we managed to have several meetings among ourselves and had planned our tentative carefully. As the director of the project, I had frequently contacted the person in charge through Whatsapp and the problems I faced here at first was he replied my message in a very non-responsive mood. Later on, when I explained the whole activity in a detailed format, only then I managed to get his response in a quicker mood. I learnt to be patience when waiting for others response. We could not be angry when the person in charge reject any of our requirements but try to look for another way to fulfill our own objectives.

hard to find and organise and confirm a venue and time where all of us
are available. All team members cooperate very well and have given me a
lot of insight about the project. I feel very inclusive inside the
project and know what was going on.

As
I was the Head of Logistic Bureau, I had to prepare transportations for
all 4 days of the visit from UM to Rumah Charis and Rumah Charis back
to UM. Other than that, I also had to made sure everyone is able to get
their lunch. I prepared a schedule on the transportation to the house
and I separated my bureau member to each day as the person in charge.
All of my team members cooperated well. Other than my logistic job
scope, we had a few meetings for planning and giving suggestions for the
project.

Hi, I am Aserah, who else it could be? LOL .Our
preparation for Social Engagement are in full swing and we can't wait to
meet with the children in Rumah Charis. As all of you know Rumah Charis
is our targeted host and most of the kids are underprivileged children.
Thanks to Dr. Amizah that always help us whenever we have question
regarding on our Social Engagement preparation. If not because of her,
our proposal might not be approved by our faculty. We had actually
decided our team organization structure right after our first meeting
with Dr. Amizah. All of us contributed our own ideas on what activities
we should conduct with the children in Rumah Charis and also on the
transportation to get there. I am quite surprised that all of us are
able to come to an intersection where all of us are able to agree with
one solid idea even though there are different thoughts at first. It is
really a good start for all of us to cooperate together to make this
Social Engagement a success!

Before the project started, we were assigned to different position. Being a secretary, I know my work is to make sure that the proposal will be done on time. Firstly, for sure we faced some obstacles in finding the most suitable place to do our project; at the same time,we had also changed our proposal for several times because of the changes in place and changes in the programmes and activities. After some trials, we found Rumah Charis. I felt happy because although we are just a newly formed team, but we still can work together to conduct a meaningful project and I think teamwork is really very important no matter how far we will go later, because we still need others help to make things fine.

Before going to Rumah Charis, I got to know about
them through their online website and their Facebook page. I did not
know what to expect as this was my first time going to an orphanage. I
also got to know that they will be organising a big event called Bazaar
where many volunteers from Kuala Lumpur will be helping the staffs to
handle this event not forgetting the volunteers from University of
Malaya's social engagement group. Before the event, every volunteers
were supervised by Andrew through the live chat. He informed us about
the agendas during the event, distributed us into smaller groups and
briefed us about our duties during the event day. After going through
the promotional materials for the event like their flyers, I know that
this event was going to be grand and attended by a lot of people. Other
than that, this Bazaar will help a lot in raising funds for the
orphanage. I learnt that as a student, I always need to help the needy
by volunteering in projects or in whatever way that is possible to bring
happiness in their life like this event.

I don't know which method should I use to communicate with them so that they won't be shy when they're talking to me. So, I always imagine the scenario there. During the preparation of the SE project, i as the member of Program bureau had discussed with my teammates on what are the suitable activities to do. During preparation session, I learned how to discuss
in a group effectively. We need to consider everyone's opinion on where
we should go for our project. If we do not agree on something, we should
decline it politely and give reasons why so there will be no
misunderstanding. In every meeting, we will discuss until we solve the
problems in the meeting so that we will not drag more time. Plus, I also
learned on how to manage my time especially with my academics and my
responsibility with my college projects. Everyone have their own task so
everyone need to finish their job so that we can excel as a team.

But upon hearing about how unprivileged some people are, it made me second guess my own decisions. I've been so excited since this was my first time volunteered a charity bazaar for the social welfare home and it is a part of social engagement course project. So, the preparation that I've made before going to the welfare home was doing some research regarding the background of the place. My team chose Rumah Charis as our host for this project and the information that i get from my research was it is a non-profit Christian based organization which was founded in 1988 by Reverend Teo How Ken as a home to serve the old and aged and have expanded to include the children and the youth . They provides shelter , support and medical care to destitute old folks and provides care for orphans and single parent children. Next, since I'm one of the member of logistic bureau for my group , i went to the mall on the night before we went tu Rumah Charis to get all the stuff needed for the activities on the next day. I can't wait to serve my best for the event !

Due to the daily grind of assignments and projects, paying a visit to a charity home had never crossed my mind. As an introvert person, I usually mixed around with friends of the same age and as a result I found it difficult to communicate efficiently with small children. I was just a typical university student, unaware of the welfare of the underprivileged children and did not know how the lack of parental love and proper education would impact their lives. Therefore, my participation in social engagement had given me this golden opportunity to move out of my comfort edge and serve the community.
We helped our team leader to find a suitable host to carry out our social service and finally we contacted the person in charge of Rumah Charis, who was seeking for volunteers to help out in their charity bazaar. After submitting the proposal and estimated our budget, as a member of publicity bureau, I helped to update the relevant information such as organization structure and programs on our blog.
Through this project, I wish I could give the children some encouragement and motivation, and unveil their hidden potentials to be creative and talented. I am doing this for the sake of helping the underprivileged children, at the same time helping myself to be a better individual in the society too.
