Day 1

1. Mohamad Khairul Aiman bin Mohamad (SIQ180018)
IC : 990823026013

On the first day of visiting the Rumah Charis, we managed to complete all the planned activities. He was explained to us about the kids there and it was so heart-brokened to know the kids like them to life at such young age facing a very awful journey. Hence, i prepared myself to greeting them, make them happier, and my mission on the rest day was to make them happy and joyful with our coming.

2. Kam Wei Cong (SIQ180012)
IC: 990510017781

At first we helped to clean up the place. I thought it would took quite some time but it ended up very fast as a result of our teamwork. Well, I guessed this was a part that we should be proud of as not only we helped the children but also we manage to foster a closer bond among the course mates. Then we started to teach the children some basic computer work. It was really fun to watch the children unleashing their inquisitive nature and learned new things from us.

3.Janet Wong Chia Wen (SIQ180011)
IC : 990209136132

After bring we started to clean Rumah Charis. But after I finished my part of cleaning, I had nothing to do so I asked around if anybody need help. Then I helped my teammates to move the bricks and cleaned the table. After the children went back from school to Rumah Charis, we started our computer tutor session. I taught a cute 6 years old girl how to type something using Words and how to search information using internet. I learned to be patient while teaching because I need to repeat my words many times to let the kid know what I am trying to say.

4. Haikal Irfan Bin Azuan Aziz Kasim (SIQ180010)
IC : 990828105933

It was fun. We help out by cleaning up the house and tutoring the kids. Although language barrier made it a bit difficult but most of them were quite went in English so overall it was great

5. Marchello (SIQ180702)
IC : B1429644

When we first arrived, we were told to help them clean the place. We had to move bricks from a certain place for whatever reason. It was very tiring. Shortly after that, 5 boys (including me) have got to go to Shah Alam to pick up a few souvenirs. We went by car and grouped into 3, with me going along with Calvin. We waited for a few hours, up until the souvenirs are ready to be picked up. While waiting, i feel like we bonded quite a bit. We talked amongst ourselves to ll up the boredom. Turns out that the warehouse were confused between the items and we had to wait for another hour. After the whole waiting also, we finally managed to go back to Rumah Charis to proceed with the activities. When we arrived, we have to put quite a few boxes filled with the said souvenirs. After that, we finally proceed to mentor the children there. After having a chit-chat with the manager of Rumah Charis, we learned that these children do have parents. Their parents may have financial shortage or else, and they were forced to foster the children. Fortunately, Rumah Charis does support and provide the children’s education, food, shelter, and much more. But the sad thing is, Rumah Charis will only provide the shelter up until the children reach the age of 14. Regardless, it is still very considerate of them to do such things. From the rst day, I learned that i indeed should feel grateful towards the things i have in my life right now. I may not be a millionaire who have much money, who can do anything i wish to do, who can buy anything i want to, but i have what’s considered enough for myself. I have my parents, i have access to education, and i do have foods to eat every single day. I should be grateful, that i am gifted with the things i have as of now, and i cannot take those things for granted. There are much more people less fortunate than myself. For now, what i could do is definitely be grateful as I am, and of course to help those who are less lucky than i am by doing this kind of community service.

6.  Calvin Wijaya (SIQ180705)
IC : C0684635

On our first Friday, we went to Charis place at 09.00 and we were given the task of cleaning the Rumah Charis because the children there would go home at 2:00 p.m. I was with Xue Liang, Adam, Alvin, Haikil and others were given the task of moving bricks from one place to another place. After that, Alvin Adam and others went to the factory to get some drinks and food. Rumah Charis coordinator talk with Mandarin language and I was very confused, but thankfully, my friend named Alvin could speak Mandarin as well, and everything ended smoothly as expected. After we returned to the Rumah Charis we taught children how to use computers such as word and internet. And that day I did not bring laptop so that’s why I did not participate in teaching, so my relationship with the children at Rumah Charis was not so close

7.Melanie Ng Huei Yee (SIQ180016)
IC : 990620088150

Cleaning up was done in the morning and we are able to complete it in less than three hours as all of us work together and help each other throughout the session. After that, we have tutoring and computer skills workshop with the children. Even though some of them might not have the opportunity to expose themselves to basic computer skills in daily life but the children shows effort in receiving what we have taught and try to apply it after that. I can see the hard work from them which makes me reflected myself to appreciate what I have now and for being able to continue my degree studies in UM.

8.Cheong Kah Ken (SIQ180007)
IC : 990513025111

We completed our first day activities with success. We carried out the cleaning activites in the morning after the person in charge of Rumah Charis gave us a short briefing. The cleaning activites were quite tough but we were still able to finish it in a blink of an eye due to our cooperation. However, I feel quite embarrassing as we did not bring enough cleaning items to Rumah Charis and we were forced to lend some from Rumah Charis. I felt so sad when the person in charge told us about the children's negative family background. In the afternoon, we began to conduct the computer tutoring session when the kids went back from school. Communicating with children is one of my strength so I didn't and it difficult to teach them some computering skills.

9. Muhammad Shahir Bin Shuhaidi (SIQ180024)
IC : 990308106297

I learn to properly coordinate works in groups and interact with my group members while handling a task. I have also realized the importance of communication with my group members during a task. As a result from the interaction of myself with my team , our bonds become stronger and we get to know each other more. Besides , I also get to know the place (Rumah Charis) and learn how the place works such as where the children live , who live in the place and how their schedules work. I have also listened to some of the stories shared by the PIC , in which it gave me a picture on how a resident of a charity house endures his/her life daily.

10. Zulaikha Aqila binti zainal abidin (SIQ180507)
IC : 990916106442

My group members and i worked together to clean up the house. Each one of us were doing different tasks. Nevertheless, we helped one another when any of our teammates was calling for help. We also spent time with the children by tutoring them. I realised that the some of them were shy at rst but when we warmed them up, they got comfortable around us. From this, i learned that having patience in teaching and cleaning up is important because we have to be passionate in the things that we are doing.

11. Elyssa syahada jamaludin (SIQ180043)
IC : 990129055842

We helped clean the rumah charis’s house. Moped the floor, clean fans and etc. Everyone participated although there are some that did more than others but all in all i think it was a great experiance. In the afternoon, we had a tutoring session where we helped the kids do their homework/teach them word. For that session, it was quite hard as most of the students was not comfortable to speak in other language besides chinese so some of the members were not able to help out. This in my opinion could be improved in a way, where the members who cant help, were to be given a different task(that would benefit the house) For example, having english lessons for some of the kids.

12. Loh Chuan Hui (SIQ180013)
IC : 991015065078

For Day 1, firstly we were divided into three teams to clean up different places such as the courtyard, the dining hall and also the kitchen. In contrary to my expectations, our team members were so cooperative that we finished the cleaning task within two hours. I was not sure if that is a good thing because that is when most of us started to glue ourselves to our mobile phones. I think we should control ourselves by not spending too much time on taking break and play with our mobile phones as this may leave a bad impression of us. While we are taking break, the person in charge, Andrew gave us a brief introduction of the children there. Those children comes from different family backgrounds and they have gone through obstacles before they reach Rumah Charis. They have experienced hunger, abused, abandoned and bullied which will cause them to feel depressed, guilt, anger, loss, empty and trauma and these may linger on them for a very long time. Fortunately, with the staffs’ patience, guidance, love and caring towards the children, they have changed, in a good way. They started from nothing to something. This made me realised that a little bit of help can change everything and sometimes make others a better person. After lunch, we conducted computer tutoring session with 10 primary school kids. When I let my little mentee to introduce himself, he was very shy but in less than one hour he started to become really naughty and they could not stay in his seat. So, I decided to make him adhere to the rules which set by us. He then became more obedient and I realised that sometimes it is not about how naughty they are, but it is about the patience that we put in them and remind them to do the right things

13 .Phoon Xue Liang (SIQ180031)
IC : 990201085617

Activities today included cleaning up the Children’s Home compound, teaching the children basic computer skills and also guiding them in doing their schoolwork. Problems faced included the cleaning materials were not enough however the workers in the children’s home managed to borrow us some of the cleaning tools. Other than that, when teaching the children some basic computer skills, some of them were noisy and they wanted to do other things instead of learning. We controlled the situation by giving them some sweets to entertain them. I realized that problem solving skills are very important when doing any tasks there and I needed to make full use of the equipment provided there for example when cleaning the compound.

14. Ahmad Syahmi bin Ahmad Rastam (SIQ180001)
IC : 000108140217

Rumah Charis was a very vibrant and suitable home that just needs a little bit of cleaning, so we volunteered to help. I have learnt how to unclog drains and also listen to the organizers orders to complete the tasks given so that Rumah Charis looks more livelier.

15. Adam Haiqal bin Azrail (SIQ180042)
IC : 99120145039

As it was the first day, we weren’t sure of the area and the people there yet. The person greeted us well and were thankful that we are collaborating with them. In the morning me and a few others were tasked to clean up the garden and stack up some bricks. Afterwards, some of the boys were tasked to follow the host to factories to collect items that were donated for the house. We followed and the host taught us on the process of donation in the house. After the first factory, the person in charge told me to try and interact personally with the other factories that I went. I was slightly nervous at first because I didn’t want to mess up anything, but it all went alright.

16. Aserah Anak Jawi (SIQ180005)
IC : 990529136078

Its the day, my team and I departed from our respective college at 7.30 a.m. I was completely excited for this because i had never did any volunteer work before this. It took us 20 minutes to reach Rumah Charis. As it was Friday, the children were not in the house because they were at school until 1.30 p.m.. What my friends and I did was that we helped the staff at Rumah Charis to do some cleaning up at the children's dining hall, compound area, the toilets, and also the kitchen. This was the first big cleaning up activities that i had joined since I have entered my degree life. It was a good opportunity for me too to reminisce the good old days where I used to have a frequent cleaning sessions with my classmates during my "mere-school-girl" era. So we actually finished with the cleaning up around 12.30 p.m. and we had lunch at the nearby lunch spot (barely remember the name). Anyway after we ate to the fullest, we then head back to the Rumah Charis. By the time we reached there, the children were back from their school. While waiting for the children done, my friends and I prepare our laptops for the next computer tutoring session. It was great to see all of them are keen to learn computer basic skills. We taught them how to use Google Docs and how to make a simple presentation slides. Although it is hard for me to deal with the children age around 7 to 10 years old, I eventually able to manage it well. I admit that it requires a high level of patience for all of my teammates to handle the kids. Anyway, we had fun to communicate with the children. They are all from different family background, I am glad to see them happy whenever we tried to interact with them.

17. Moh Li Lin (SIQ180017)
IC : 990616015610

It was the first day of our project. We were excited to meet all the children there. In the morning, we were asked by the person in charge, which was Andrew, to clean up the surroundings of Rumah Charis. We spent almost 2 hours to clean up toilets, courtyard, dining hall and also the kitchen. However, when things were done, some of us started to scroll our handphones and gossip around. I think that we should avoid this because we were here to serve, to help and to learn, so we have to at least put some more efforts and passion on it,or else, we might leave bad impression to the person there. When we were taking our break, we were told by Andrew that the children in Rumah Charis actually come from different backgrounds and they had gone through some obstacles before reaching Rumah Charis. However, what make them different and better from the past are the caring and love from the people in Rumah Charis. I started to realise how fortunate I am for having a complete home and how great that I have this opportunity to contribute to the society. After having our lunch, then the computer tutoring session started. It was not new to me to deal with children. Although they are mischievous and naughty, I felt very satisfied when the children learnt from us, and I felt myself being more patient after giving tutorials to them.

18. Puvendren a/l Magesvaran (SIQ180032)
IC : 990116075211

Day 1 was the ‘gotong-royong’ day. I learnt that teamwork and good communication skills helps a lot in easing our tasks. I had the opportunity to strengthen bonds with my course mates especially when we worked together to carry items from the lorry to the house. I realised how fast things get done when we worked in groups to clean the house which was spacious and had a vast compound. Besides, I had the chance to bond with the orphans during the tutoring sessions. I thought them how to use some the basic functions in a laptop. I also get to know more about the orphans personally such as their interests, hobbies and ambitions in life. I learnt that they are very cheerful and energetic when it comes to learning new things and playing games. Just because they didn’t have the same environment growing up with parents like the rest of us, does not mean that they are any different from us. They also have goals and dreams to achieve in their life.

19. Tan Chia Ping (SIQ180034 )
IC : 991227075526

It is the first day I visit to Rumah Charis. The person in charge there is very friendly. Our first activity is to clean up Rumah Charis. The place is very big. Fortunately, we have 25 members. So, we can clean up all the place of Rumah Charis in the morning. Second activities is computer tutor session. At the beginning, they are shy to talk with us. So, I try to ask some question to them and introduce myself first for ice-breaking. After that, they will also tell us about the experience in their school. After ice-breaking, I can teach them about computer smoothly. Although their parents is not beside them, they also can continue their life happily and never give up. This is the moral value that i can learn from the children there.

20. Nadiah Zahirah Binti Muhammad Ali (SIQ180501)
IC : 990226076004

On Day 1, our activity of the day is gotong-royong around the house. We split up into 2 groups, my group do the upstairs and another group do the downstairs. I was in charge of sweeping and moping the floor, wiping the dining tables, clean the fans and wipe the sliding doors and grills of the house. From this activity, i learned that it is not easy to manage such a big house like Rumah Charis. They have to take care of the children and also making sure that the house is clean and comfortable all the time. I am glad that i can contribute my energy and time to help them. Even though it is tiring, but it feels satisfied to see the house is clean and to see them happy and appreciate our help.

21.  Mohd Hilmi bin Mohd Anuar (SIQ180020)
IC : 991020127499

For the first day, I visited Rumah Charis for the first time. I was really touched when the person in-charge there told us the story on how the charity house was built and for whom. He also told us what kind of children who are currently in the house. Some of them have abusive parents, some of their parents cannot afford them, so they have to stay there and lots more. I was really sad for them and at the same time I feel grateful with my life. We helped them clean up their house. It was big because they are supporting many children. I cleaned up the drain. It was really filthy. Since I got some help from my batch mates, we managed to finish it up before 11 am. I also cleaned up the fans so that the children can feel comfortable. After that I feel so proud that I had accomplished something really good and I hope the children will appreciate it.

IC : 970731075389

It started out with deligating the work among our group which is mainly to clean the house while the orphaned children were in school. As the work wasn’t little, I’m glad the team was able to finish it with the most efficient way. It shows that’s a little amount of teamwork goes a long way. In the afternoon sessions, we bonded with the children as we taught them with our laptops. I feel fortunate to experience the raw happiness one would feel whilst doing something and expecting nothing in return.

So , 5th of April 2019 was the day that I've been waiting for . It is our first day for our project . We started to gether at our respective college at 7.15 a.m since we need to arrive at the location before 8.00 a.m , but unfortunately there was a bit of delayed since my friend stucked in the traffic jammed that morning. So this is the thing that we will manage on the next trip to Rumah Charis . So when we're arrived then gethered at Rumah Charis , we had been give a briefed from the committee of Rumah . Since it was Friday , the kids were at school and coming back around 1.00 p.m to 2.00 p.m . So , we started our rst activity with gotong-royong . As a team , we divided among us into two groups and everyone have their own task but still working together to make it more effective and efficient . It's quite impressive that my team work together very well and managed to settle up the gotong-royong activity early. For the first day , it's a bit hard for me and some of us to communicate and get a direct information from the person in charge of Rumah Charis since English is not their rst language. Overall for the first day , the bonding between group member become closer and it is good to know the committee from Rumah Charis and I'm excited to come for the next day.

24. Ong Jun Wen (SIQ180029)
IC : 990720045342

It was our very first day at Rumah Charis Home for the Children. After a short briefing by Mr. Jackson, we kick-started our work by cleaning up the compound of Home for the Children. I was a part of the cleaning work by helping to sweep the floor, clean the balcony’s railing and the sliding doors. However, one of the problems that we encountered was the lack of cleaning equipment such as brooms, mops, pails, gloves, old cloths and dustpans. Thankfully, we managed to borrow all the required equipment from the children’s home and the cleaning was done with ease. After a short lunch break, we proceeded with our work by cleaning all the ceiling fans, stand fans and wall fans at the home for children while waiting for the children to be back from school. Our eagerness to meet the children was finally satisfied when a van drove into the garage and soon a bunch of innocent, naive kids swarmed out. Nevertheless, they were quite timid upon meeting strangers and just gave us some shy smiles. Without further hesitation, our first activities with the children began, which was the computer tutoring session. The person in charge, Mr. Andrew told us that, “Tell them the rules before you start. If we don’t set the rules for them, they will set their own rules.” At first, I was at doubt but eventually I understood. I found that it was challenging to communicate with my mentee, Daniel, a primary school kid, especially when he was not very obedient to my orders. I had to think of an interesting topic to attract his attention so that he had the interest to continue learning the Microsoft Word. The computer tutoring session was then followed by the homework session. During this session, I found that the children were used to speaking their mother tongue, which was Mandarin and as a result they were less fluent in English and Bahasa Malaysia. I tried to speak simple English as frequent as possible with my other mentee, Hai Yi so that she could improve her language. I also managed to help her to deal with her mathematics exercises. Before we left, we had a short briefing by the person in charge, Mr. Andrew about the bazaar day which was held on the 27 of April. The day was tiring but an insightful one for me as I learnt to be more patient and loving while interacting with the children. When I saw the innocent happiness on their faces, I was confident that we would get along better during our next visit.

25. Ahmad Za'im Azfar Bin Mohd Hamdan (SIQ180002)
IC : 990915056025

It was very tiring as we're required to do some cleaning up at the place but as soon as we finish, we can see that the place become quite neat and it was very satisfying, the teamwork also awesome.
